1972 Brooklyn Championship Team
The 1972 Tech Football Team won a Brooklyn Championship by defeating an outstanding Jefferson team in the PSAL Semifinal for the City Championship. It was the first sudden death overtime game in playoff history.
They couldn’t have known, as they walked off the field that chilly November day, that the PSAL CITY CHAMPIONSHIP would again be decided in sudden death overtime. In a hard-fought battle, a gritty Tech team fell short as Far Rockaway won the toss and scored on the only possession in overtime.
The 1972 team was loaded with talented athletes. No player played both ways until the Championship Game.
There were 13 current and future All Stars on the team.
3 – All City Selections
3 – All Brooklyn Queens selections
4 – All Brooklyn selections
3 – Honorable Mention selections
And Head Coach, Joe Cuzzocrea, was selected as the PSAL Coach of the Year.
When asked to comment on their success, the three most influential people mentioned were:
Adam Cirillo – who coached them at the JV level and called them Adams Tigers.
Joe Cuzzocrea – who coached them at the varsity level and taught them how to trust each other.
and the 1971 team – who taught them how to love each other and be a team.
When asked to comment on their time at Tech…the things most often mentioned are the lifelong friendships that were built playing football at Tech…and the lessons learned on the field that gave them the tools to navigate through life’s triumphs and tragedies.
